Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about classes, workshops, and art therapy Whether you’re new to art or looking to deepen your practice, I’m here to support your creative journey. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about my classes, workshops, and art therapy sessions.
General Questions
Absolutely not. All of my classes, workshops, and art therapy sessions are designed to welcome complete beginners. Whether you’ve never picked up a pencil or you’re looking to refine existing skills, you’ll find a supportive environment where you can learn at your own pace. The only requirement is a desire to create and explore.
I welcome participants of all ages. My classes and workshops are suitable for adults and mature teenagers (typically 16+), while art therapy sessions can be adapted for various age groups depending on individual needs. Age and experience don’t matter – what matters is your willingness to engage with the creative process.
Sessions take place in my dedicated studio space, which provides a welcoming, well-lit environment with all the necessary materials and equipment. For workshops, we occasionally work outdoors (weather permitting) for plein air painting and urban sketching experiences. Specific location details are provided upon booking.
You can book by contacting me directly through the website’s contact form or by phone. I’ll discuss your interests, answer any questions, and help you find the right class, workshop, or therapy session for your needs. Early booking is recommended as spaces can fill up quickly, especially for popular workshops.
Classes
I offer a range of classes including:
- Foundation Drawing Skills – Essential techniques in pencil and charcoal
- Watercolor Fundamentals – Learn to control water, pigment, and timing
- Light, Shadow & Tone – Master dimensional drawing and tonal variation
- Mixed Media Exploration – Combine techniques to develop your unique voice
Each class focuses on building specific skills through hands-on practice with personalized guidance.
Classes typically run as weekly sessions, with each session lasting 2-3 hours depending on the specific class. Most classes operate in terms of 3-4 months, allowing you to progressively build skills and see real development in your work. This regular structure helps establish a consistent creative practice.
I keep class sizes small, typically between 6-12 participants. This intimate setting ensures everyone receives personalized attention and guidance while still benefiting from the energy and inspiration that comes from working alongside fellow artists.
I’ll provide a recommended materials list tailored to your specific class. Having your own materials allows you to practice at home between sessions and develop familiarity with your tools. I’m always happy to advise on quality supplies that suit your budget.
While it’s ideal to start from the beginning of a term, I understand life happens. Depending on the class and current enrollment, it may be possible to join mid-term. Contact me to discuss the current curriculum and whether joining partway through would work for your skill level and goals.
Workshops
Workshops are intensive, focused sessions that allow you to dive deep into a specific technique or theme without a long-term commitment. While classes build skills progressively over several weeks, workshops are typically standalone experiences lasting from a few hours to a full day. They’re perfect for exploring new techniques, getting inspired, or fitting creative learning into a busy schedule.
Workshop topics vary throughout the year and include:
- Light & Shadow in Watercolor – Creating depth and atmosphere
- Urban Sketching Adventure – Drawing on location with confidence
- Botanical Illustration Basics – Detailed observation and delicate painting
- Expressive Portraits in Charcoal – Emotional character studies
New workshops are regularly added, so check the website or sign up for updates to stay informed.
Most workshops run for 4-6 hours, typically on a weekend day to accommodate working schedules. Some specialized workshops may be shorter (2-3 hours) or extend to a full day depending on the complexity of the topic. Specific timing is provided in the workshop description when you book.
Yes. All necessary materials are included in workshop fees. You’ll have access to quality art supplies suited to the workshop theme, and you’ll take home your finished work. If you have favorite materials you’d like to use, you’re welcome to bring them along.
Absolutely. Workshops are a wonderful complement to regular classes. They offer an opportunity to explore techniques outside your current curriculum, experiment with new approaches, and gain fresh inspiration to bring back to your ongoing practice.
Art Therapy
Art therapy uses creative expression as a tool for reflection, self-exploration, and emotional wellbeing. It’s not about creating perfect artwork – it’s about the process of making art as a pathway to understanding yourself better. Through guided art-making with various materials, you explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a gentle, non-verbal way that words alone cannot capture.
No artistic skill is required! Art therapy focuses on the process of creation, not the final product. There’s no right or wrong way to create. The therapeutic benefit comes from engaging with the materials, expressing yourself authentically, and exploring what emerges naturally as you work. Your willingness to engage openly with the process is all that’s needed.
Each session begins with a brief check-in where we discuss how you’re feeling and what you’d like to explore. I then introduce a theme or prompt (or we work freely if you prefer), and you create using various art materials in a supportive, non-judgmental space. Afterward, we reflect on what emerged, any insights gained, and how the process felt. Sessions are entirely guided by your needs and comfort level.
I offer both individual and small group art therapy sessions. Individual sessions provide private, personalized attention focused entirely on your journey. Group sessions (typically 3-5 people) offer the added benefit of shared creative energy and gentle community support, while still maintaining personal space for your own exploration. You can choose what feels right for you.
Themes are tailored to your needs but commonly include:
- Emotions in Color – Exploring and expressing feelings through abstract color work
- Inner Landscape Collage – Visualizing your inner world and current life situation
- Mindful Mark-Making – Meditative drawing for calm and presence
- Self-Portrait as Metaphor – Symbolic self-exploration and self-compassion
Sessions adapt to where you are emotionally and what feels most meaningful to explore.
Art therapy can be a powerful complement to traditional talk therapy, but it’s led by me as a professional artist rather than a licensed therapist. While the creative process offers profound opportunities for self-reflection, emotional expression, and insight, it should not replace professional mental health treatment if you’re dealing with serious psychological concerns. I’m happy to work alongside your existing therapeutic support.
This is entirely flexible and based on your goals. Some people find value in a single exploratory session, while others benefit from ongoing sessions over several weeks or months. We can start with a few sessions to see how it feels and then decide together how to proceed. There’s no pressure or predetermined commitment.
Practical Information
Fees vary depending on the type of session, duration, and whether it’s individual or group-based. Class terms are typically priced as a package, while workshops and art therapy sessions can be booked individually. Contact me directly for current pricing, payment plans, and any available discounts for booking multiple sessions or referring friends.
Life happens, and I understand that sometimes plans need to change. For classes, if you need to miss a session, please let me know as early as possible. For workshops and individual sessions, I request at least 48 hours notice for cancellations to avoid a fee. Specific policy details are provided when you book.
Yes. Gift certificates make wonderful presents for creative friends and family. They can be purchased for specific classes or workshops, or as open-value certificates that recipients can use toward any session. Contact me to arrange a gift certificate, and I’ll create a beautiful presentation for you to give.
I strive to make my sessions accessible to everyone. Please let me know about any specific needs, accommodations, or concerns when booking, and I’ll do my best to ensure you have a comfortable, supportive experience. This includes physical accessibility, sensory considerations, or any other requirements that would help you participate fully.
While most sessions are held in person to fully experience the materials and environment, I do offer limited virtual options for certain classes and art therapy sessions. Online format works particularly well for demonstration-based learning and reflective art therapy work. Contact me to discuss whether virtual sessions would suit your needs.
